Ideal for couples, singles and small groups of 2-8 people who are looking for a high quality Timbavati game lodge experience. Clients staying at Bateleur Main Camp will enjoy daily morning and afternoon-evening guided game drives in an open safari vehicle with qualified guide & tracker – spotlights are used after dark. Optional bush walks are also offered in accordance with the preferences of the group, as well as bushcraft, a spider & scorpion module, and basic astronomy if the sky is clear.
Accommodating 2-8 people, the Camp offers 4 comfortable safari tents with a unique design. Each tent has: a thatched A-frame roof with supporting gum-pole structure and covered patio; canvas sides with large windows offering fixed mosquito screens and roll-down flaps; double wooden front doors with fixed mosquito screens and roll-down flaps for the top half; a large en-suite bathroom. Each unit sleeps 2 persons in upmarket comfort with spacious & comfortable beds, quality linen, bedside tables with solar powered bedside lamps, wardrobes & adequate storage facilities, and a solar powered fan for the hot weather. Plug points are provided for charging camera batteries but hair dryers cannot be used due to the excessive load that they place on the system. Each spacious en-suite bathroom has flush-toilet, basin and a hot-water shower – one unit has an interior bath tub and a private outdoor shower. Quality towels are provided.
For guests who would like to try a shower under the stars, outdoor showers are provided with all the privacy that you will need – water is heated via a boiler fuelled by a wood fire. A chemical-free swimming pool is located at the central area for guests to cool off between guided activities on a hot day. The central boma consists of a well-finished partially walled area open to the stars with chairs set up around a central fireplace, located next to a braai/barbeque area where food is prepared by the chef on the open fire. This is an ideal place to enjoy meals when the weather allows and to relax around the fire and share stories of the day’s activities under a big African sky. There is an indoor dining area seating 8 people for unpleasant weather, spilling out onto an open lounge area for relaxing during fair weather. Drinks can be purchased from the bar.
When building Bateleur Main camp, making as small a footprint as possible was a priority. Tented walls were chosen over concrete structures, allowing guests inside the units a closer interaction with the outdoors. No trees were removed in the building process, allowing the camp to unobtrusively blend into the surrounds. Approximately 120 trees have subsequently been planted in and around the camp. Regular 4-legged visitors that can be seen walking within the camp perimeter during the day include Nyalas, warthogs and bushbuck, while elephants, buffalo and rhino can sometimes be seen walking through the river bed in front of the camp.
Bateleur Main Camp is situated within the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, part of the Greater Kruger National Park. A high quality, comfortable and unique South African bush camp, offering an authentic African safari experience.
The simplest and most affordable way to get between Johannesburg and the lodge is to make use of the Ashtons Kruger Shuttle, which operates daily in both directions between Johannesburg and Hoedspruit (except 25 December). Days 2 - 3 (or more)
In the mornings set off at first light after a snack of biscuits and coffee or tea. Enjoying the brisk air from the open safari vehicles we go in search of the plains game, herds of buffalo and elephant, the endangered rhinos, the spectacular big cats, and the occasional packs of wild dogs that frequent the area. The ranger will impart his extensive knowledge of the wildlife and birds and we may even be lucky enough to come across a kill that took place during the hours of darkness. Or, if the whole group agrees, you may choose to walk (weather permitting) directly from camp or else use a vehicle to get further out. The ranger will decipher the tracks and signs left by the passing animals during the night. The thrill of walking, tracking and getting up close to some of the creatures of the bush is an unforgettable experience. On the walks there is a lot of emphasis on all the interesting things seen including animals, trees, plants, insects and birds. Breakfast is enjoyed back at the game lodge and then there is time to unwind and siesta during the heat of the day, making use of the swimming pool and central relaxation area or your comfortable safari unit. On one of the days you will be treated to very informative instruction relating to bushcraft and a spider & scorpion module. You may also have booked an interactive reptile demonstration or rhino micro-chipping at an extra cost, although the latter activity would take up several daylight hours. After a light lunch it is time to head out amongst the wildlife again. In the afternoons we set off after the main heat of the day when the animals become more active, following a similar procedure to the morning drive for the remaining hours of daylight. Close to sunset we stop at a scenic location where we’ll have sun downers while enjoying a stunning African sunset. We then climb aboard the open safari vehicle and go in search of the nocturnal creatures - as the diurnal animals and birds anxiously get ready for bed, the stage and sounds change and a whole new world awakens. Back at the main camp a hearty supper and a warm campfire will be waiting for you where stories are exchanged and guided activities are discussed for the following day. During one of the evenings you will be treated to some basic astronomy if the sky is clear. You may also have booked tribal dancing/drumming at an extra cost. After a long day in the bush there is nothing more rewarding than to lie in your comfortable bed and listen to the sounds of the night under a blanket of the overwhelming African stars!
Set off at first light for your final guided game activity - appreciating the typical scents and sounds of the bush you’ll realise how much you’ve learned already! After breakfast back at the safari camp it’s time to pack up and say our reluctant goodbyes; you are then transferred back to meet the Ashtons Kruger Shuttle bound for Johannesburg. Whatever you have seen and done you will have had an up-close and personal experience of the real African bush and wildlife! And a whole new world of experiences waits for your next visit.
