The game lodge is private and secluded, is not open to day visitors, and enjoys its own 3500 hectare traverse within Balule.
Greenfire Game Lodge also gives you the opportunity to experience the fauna and flora on foot in the form of extended guided bush walks under the watchful guidance of qualified rangers. Bush walks open up a whole new world – participation in any bush walks is completely optional. The opportunity to walk with armed rangers in a truly wild part of Africa is a rare and special treat that will never be forgotten. And it all unfolds in prime Big 5 territory!
Guided activities take place every morning at sunrise and every afternoon-evening from mid-late afternoon. All guided activities are undertaken on a consultative basis because we do not believe in sticking to a rigid one-size-fits-all approach. The experienced rangers tap into their intimate knowledge of local wildlife and weather conditions and then, over dinner each evening, discuss the various options for the following day with the guests. Taking people’s differing interests and energy-levels into account, the rangers then tailor the next day’s events to best accommodate each group’s preferences. On an average day you will have the choice between a morning game drive and an extended morning bush walk, each 3-4 hours in duration. Due to the heat the afternoon activities are almost always game drives, but we are very flexible for those who want to do more walking than driving.
The lodge can sleep up to 18 people in 9 luxurious, twin-bedded, en-suite accommodation units, each with its own viewing deck that offers commanding views of the Mohlabetsi River and the surrounding bush. The en-suite bathrooms are fully equipped and offer hot showers and flush toilets. Units are on 220v electricity supply and linen and towels are provided. An inviting splash pool and relaxation area, nestled below the raised lounge, bar and dining area, all with dramatic views of the bush, make up the central area of the camp. Meals are usually plated although the buffet option is offered from time to time; all meals are served either in the dining area or under the stars in the boma.
The lodge has been carefully designed to integrate with the natural environment thereby enhancing the wilderness ambiance. It was completely revamped during the first half of 2013, and the resultant level of quality and comfort is guaranteed to exceed expectations.
Greenfire Game Lodge is situated in the vast Balule Nature Reserve which is part of the Greater Kruger National Park, close to Hoedspruit, approximately 5-6 hour’s drive from Johannesburg International Airport
The simplest and most affordable way to get between Johannesburg and the lodge is to make use of the Ashtons Kruger Shuttle, which operates daily in both directions between Johannesburg and Hoedspruit (except 25 December). Please note that the shuttle rates are included in our packages. Before/after the 5-6 hour road transfer you will be transferred between the Balule gate and the Greenfire Game lodge. Getting to and from Greenfire could not be simpler!

The guided bush walks are led by qualified and armed rangers, primarily in the mornings but also in the afternoons for the avid walkers. Every walk is a book on its own, with the emphasis on information relating to all the wonders of nature, big and small.
Traditional guided game drives are conducted every morning and afternoon-evening in open safari vehicles, affording the opportunity to get closer to the animals for photographic purposes. Please note that we stick to the designated reserve roads in order to preserve the environment. During the guided game drives you can view the magnificent creatures up close from the comfort of the open safari vehicles, using spotlights after sun downers to search for the nocturnal animals.

Day 2 - 3 (or more)
Prior to each guided activity either your designated ranger or the lodge manager will liaise with the group regarding the choice of upcoming activity. Depending on weather, animal movements, and client preferences, some activities will be drives only, some walks only, and some a combination of the two. Guided activities are offered in both the mornings and afternoons each day, and after sun downers everyone enjoys guided game drives using spotlights after dark.
In the mornings set off at first light after a snack of rusks and coffee or tea.
Enjoying the brisk air from the open safari vehicles we may go in search of the plains game, herds of buffalo and elephant, the endangered rhinos, the spectacular big cats, and the occasional packs of wild dogs that frequent the area. The ranger will impart his extensive knowledge of the wildlife and birds and we may even be lucky enough to come across a kill that took place during the hours of darkness.
Or you may choose to walk (weather permitting) directly from camp or else use a vehicle to get further out. The ranger will decipher the tracks and signs left by the passing animals during the night. The thrill of walking, tracking and getting up close to some of the creatures of the bush is an unforgettable experience. On the walks there is a lot of emphasis on all the interesting things seen including animals, trees, plants, insects and birds.
Breakfast is enjoyed back at the game lodge and then there is time to unwind and siesta during the heat of the day, making use of the splash pool and central relaxation area or your comfortable safari unit. After lunch it is time to head out amongst the wildlife again.
In the afternoons we set off after the main heat of the day when the animals become more active, following a similar procedure to the morning drive for the remaining hours of daylight. If it’s cool enough and there are tracks to follow the ranger may suggest that we walk for part of the time before the sun gets too low. Close to sunset we stop at a scenic location where we’ll have sun downers while enjoying a stunning African sunset. We then climb aboard the open safari vehicles and go in search of the nocturnal creatures - as the diurnal animals and birds anxiously get ready for bed, the stage and sounds change and a whole new world awakens.
Back at the game lodge a hearty supper and a warm campfire will be waiting for you where stories are exchanged and guided activities are discussed for the following day. After a long day in the bush there is nothing more rewarding than to lie in bed and listen to the sounds of the night under a blanket of the overwhelming African stars!
Set off at first light for your final guided game activity - appreciating the typical scents and sounds of the bush you’ll realise how much you’ve learned already! After breakfast back at the game lodge it’s time to pack up and say our reluctant goodbyes; we then transfer you back to meet the Ashtons Kruger Shuttle bound for Johannesburg or your own onward transfer arrangements from Hoedspruit. Whatever you have seen and done you will have had an up-close and personal experience of the real African bush and wildlife! And a whole new world of experiences awaits for your next visit.
